The exploration of art and architecture in terms of historical, social, and political contexts, meaning and style will promote a general understanding of the development of art forms and style from different periods and in different cultures, as well as the effects of cultural exchanges on the arts. Discussions of techniques, media, composition, and representation will provide an understanding of key concepts in art. Museum visit required.
Textbook: This course relies on Open Educational Resources. Readings will be posted to Blackboard weekly and students are required to complete them prior to each meeting.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Online Assignments: There will be two online short response assignments (each being worth 4% of the final course grade) based on class readings that you need to complete throughout the semester. Each short response will be based on previously assigned readings and will give you an opportunity to review and consolidate materials discussed in class. These assignments will be posted on Blackboard ahead of time and you will have one day to submit your responses. Instructions on how to complete them and further details will be sent via email with a reminder made during class meetings. (20% of your final grade)
Midterm Exam: The midterm online exam will consist of five short slide identifications (artist, date, title along with a short paragraph explaining the work’s historical and cultural significance) and two short essay responses based on slide comparisons. Upon identifying the works featured in the slide comparison section, the student will compare and contrast the artworks, discussing the differences in style and formal elements and relating them to their broader sociocultural and historical contexts. Review files, each containing 15 reproductions of works that we have previously discussed in class, will be posted to Blackboard approximately three weeks prior to the exam. (25% of your final grade)
Research Assignment: In the second half of the semester, you will write a four-page, double-spaced (Times New Roman font, size 12, and with one-inch margins) research paper responding to one of the two questions included in the Research Assignment Prompt available on Blackboard. You will need to choose one question, use at least two secondary sources, and support your response with at least two artworks previously discussed in class. This exercise is meant to hone your research skills and your ability to effectively analyze secondary sources. You will need to include proper citations according to the Chicago Manual of Style and a bibliography.
I will grade your paper based on writing and composition skills (1), ability to formulate an argument clearly and defend it using secondary sources (2), and conduct a successful visual and art historical analysis of selected artworks to support your thesis (3). Each of these categories will be worth 30 points. Additionally, I will grade the clarity of your essay based on your ability to deliver an elegant and neatly formatted paper. This will be worth 10 points. (20% of your final grade)
Final Exam: The final exam will follow the format of the midterm. Review file will be posted on Blackboard two weeks prior to the exam. (25% of your final exam)
Participation: Attendance and active participation in class discussion are required of each student in the course and you must be able to attend our weekly Zoom meetings. Students should not be afraid to ask questions and discussion (not limited to the aforementioned readings) is greatly encouraged. Final grade will be lowered if attendance and participation are not satisfactory. If you have any questions about your participation grade and attendance, feel free to schedule an appointment with the course instructor. (10% of your final grade)
Final Grade: The average score, based on the course requirements outlined above, will determine your final grade for the course. The final grade will be assigned according to the official BMCC alphanumeric breakdown of grades provided below (https://www.bmcc.cuny.edu/academics/policies/grading-policies/grading-system/).
